Using the CSULB Library

Library home page - http://www.csulb.edu/library

-COAST for finding books

-Link+ and ILLiad for items we don’t have

Finding Articles

Getting a citation:

-Select a database to search

-Break search into key terms

-Search key terms using BOOLEAN Operators (AND, OR)

-Refine search using limiters (pub. year or type, etc.)

Databases & Indexes:

 Online Databases

-Academic Search Elite – All subject areas

-ACS Web Editions – Full-text American Chemical Society Journals

-General Science Abstracts – General index of science journals

-Science Direct- Full-text Elsevier journals

-Web of Science -For cited reference searches

Print Indexes

Chemical Abstracts  3rd Floor Rm 322  QD1 A51  (Unavailable during Library remodel)

-Write down everything!

-Title, Author, Journal, vol., issue, page numbers, year

-Or E-mail/save/print if possible

Finding the article

1. Full-text or PDF from the database

2.  SFX

3.  Check Coast on “Locate Journals

-Type in title of the journal (NOT the article title)

4.  Inter-Library Loan (ILLiad)

Next session:

Or

-Tuesday February 13, 9:00am-10:30pm

Session 2

Your Library PowerPoint  -  Part 2:  Using SciFinder Scholar

Chem 420: Advanced Organic Chemistry

Library Instruction Part II

Using SciFinder Scholar

Find a CAS Registry number from a chemical name

Locate

Substances

Enter name of chemical, click ok

Click microscope for chemical information including CAS #

Find recent journal articles about preparation of a chemical

-In the chemical record , click the A->B button, select Product, Click ok

Newest articles are at the top

Find the properties of a chemical (and the articles that reported them)

-In the chemical record , click the microscope, and then click on experimental properties.  Each property has a footnote.  At the bottom of the screen will be the articles, and you can click on them to see the article abstract

Find CAS number, structure, synonym, physical properties, and proper disposal of a chemical

All of these can be found in the chemical record, except the proper disposal, the best place to look for that is the MSDS for the chemical.  One free place to access those online is:  http://msds.ehs.cornell.edu/msdssrch.asp

Find an article by a specific author

            Explore

                        Author Name

Enter the author’s last name and first initial, click ok

A list of names will come up, select one or more.  (E.g. Henry N Po, H Po, H N Po) Click Get References.

A list of articles will come up, newest ones first.  Click the microscope to see the abstract.  Click the paper icon to see if there is online access, if this does not lead to full-text, search for the journal in COAST, you may still find full text online, or you may find print in the library.

Find papers on a topic from a specific year

            Explore

                        Research Topic

Enter your key terms.  SciFinder will bring back a list of articles with one or more of your terms, and the numbers of articles, select the ones you would like to see.
