CASE 17

69 year old white female complaining of frequent headaches, dizziness, and tinnitus.  Two weeks prior to admission had severe nosebleed.  Has several years history of gout.  PE reveals ruddy complexion.  Spleen is palpable 4 cm below LCM.
 

Additional Information:  Red cell volume - 50 ml/kg (<36 ml/kg)

Bone marrow:  Hypercellular with panhyperplasia of elements.
              Iron stores absent.
