This 44 year old man was admitted with stomach pains. He had previously been hospitalized several times with peptic ulcer disease.

Hgb - 7.2 g/dl WBC - 11.9 x 1O⁹/l

Hct - 22% Polys - 7.4 x 1O⁹/l

RBC - 3.8 x 10¹²/l Bands - .47 x 1O⁹/l

MCV - 57 Lymphs - 2.8 x 1O⁹/l

MCH - 18.9 Monos - 1.0 x 1O⁹/l

MCHC - 30.1 Eosins - .l x 1O⁹/l

Platelets 320 x 10⁹/l
Retic count 0.6%

Additional Information

Serum iron - 23 ug/dl (nl: 80-160)

serum ferritin - 10 ng/dl (normal 20-250)

TIBC - 396 ug/dl (250-420)

Hgb electrophoresis - normal

peripheral blood

Bone marrow: Fe Stain
