RTP Appeal

Faculty engaged in the RTP process have the right to respond to each level of review. The details of this right are found in the contract under Article 15.5:

"At all levels of review, before recommendations are forwarded to a subseqauent review level, faculty unit employees shall be given a copy of the recommendation and the written reasons therefore. The faculty unit employee may submit a rebuttal statement or response in writing and/or request a meeting be held to discuss the recommendation withing ten (10) days following receipt of the recommendation. A copy of the response or reb uttal statement shall accompany the Working Personnel Action File and also be sent to all previous levels of review. This section shall not require that evaluation timelines be extended."

We have found that carefully crafted responses to each level of review provide an excellent way for faculty to clarify inappropriate emphases/inaccuracies etc. that a committee may make and set the stage for a formal appeal if a negative decision regarding the RTP process is made.

We strongly encourage probationary faculty to work with the Faculty Rights Group to develop strategic rebuttals. For help, please contact Lydia Sondhi, Faculty Rights Chair at LSondhi@csulb.edu or at X5-5165.
