OUTREACH - "Jazz for Today: Jazz for Tomorrow"
The Institute also maintains nationally recognized jazz outreach programs
in several areas of California. Currently centered in the Compton and Long
Beach school districts in Southern California and in Monterey and San Francisco,
these programs provide significant jazz musical experiences for middle school
and high school students. The Southern California based "Jazz for Today:
Jazz for Tomorrow” program provides live jazz music to children in the
Long Beach Unified School District who otherwise would not have a chance to
hear it. In addition, the CIPJ developed an after-school instrumental jazz
program in the Compton Unified School District that has received national
recognition winning the 2002 IAJE Louis Armstrong Fellowship.
RESEARCH – Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Partnerships
The CIPJ has also established relationships with the Smithsonian Institution
in Washington DC at both the Long Beach State campus and at CSU Monterey Bay.
These programs are recording additional jazz oral histories and developing
a searchable DVD based format for the archiving of the recordings.
PARTNERS
The CIPJ partners with the California State University and all of the individual
campuses contained therein, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lyla
Wallace Readers Digest Foundation, the California Arts Council, the Public
Corporation for the Arts in Long Beach, and the California State Legislature
and the Governor's Office.
