The Poston collection is one of the most extensive jazz repositories in the world. The Collection contains near-complete collections of every jazz record from every label that recorded jazz dating back to the 1920s. In addition, the archive has the complete music libraries of Pete Rugolo, Howard Rumsey, Ken Hanna, Bob Cooper and June Christy, incomplete collections from the Gerry Mulligan and Don Ellis libraries and the 750,000 jazz photograph negatives from the Donald Dean collection. |

| Long under the able trusteeship of Mr. Maurice Hall, this collection stands out as a treasure trove of rare recordings. The Thornbury Collection consists of nearly 1,500 reel-to-reel tapes of live broadcasts Mr. Thornbury did during his illustrious radio career. Such shows of his as Jazz Alive!, the American Jazz Radio Festival, and Jazz at the Institute join one-of-a-kind recordings of other shows, such as Mary McPartland's Piano Jazz, and recordings of one-time-only performances from the Monterey, Chicago, Newport, and Big Apple Jazz Festivals, as well as on-air interviews and impromptu performances. | |

| Several years ago, local radio station KPFK converted to a talk radio format, whereupon the station donated its record and tape collection to the CIPJ. Many of the 300-500 tapes are unmarked and will require listening to ascertain what is on them. This collection will provide many hours of interesting listening and no doubt reward with some live on-air broadcasts that aren't available elsewhere. | |
