UHP 100 - Angles of Vision
What is involved in being intelligent?
Many people equate intelligence with IQ, but recent writers have suggested
broader, richer characterizations. Yale psychologist Robert J. Sternberg,
for example, believes that successful intelligence involves analytic, creative
and practical components.
We shall use Sternberg’s critique
of IQ as a basis for sharpening our analytic skills, and Sternberg’s notions
of creative and practical intelligences as launching pads from
which to explore other theories of intelligences such as Gardner’s multiple
intelligences and Goleman’s claims for emotional intelligence. By
means of a design project we shall investigate and evaluate Norman’s recommendations
for the intelligent design of objects and by means of at least one case
study we will assess Dorner’s recommendations for intelligence in
complex situations. This course will integrate critical thinking
skills and open discussion to encourage creative solutions and develop
better decision-making.
