My music
Introduction
In my senior English we had a final project that every senior had to finish. We had to make a portfolio of all the assignments and projects that we had completed that we thought were the best from the all four years. We, of course, had to be graded on it or senioritis would have taken us all and no one would have done it. The teacher gave me back the assignment with a 100%, leaving a comment saying something like, "Isn't that true. Good job." It was almost like one of those movie moments where the high school senior writes a final paper of what he wants in his life, he goes through hell and comes back and the teacher says, "Good job." The guy smiles. Well, what did I say?
"Music speaks the words that I cannot."
Music is everything. It would be hard to live my life without music. It gives me inspiration, it cheers me up, it makes me angry, it makes me content, and it makes me upset.
A lot of people have asked me: "Who's your favorite band?" I can never tell them because it's so close. I've spent hours sometimes trying to figure out which one is better. I don't have a favorite band, but here are some bands that have made the most influence in my life:
AFI > A Fire Inside
I have to admit, I heard about AFI a little bit late. My first video that I saw of them was on MTV (when MTV still played music) It was "Girls Not Grey" and it was really dope. As a side comment, anyone notice that the song's volume is always turned down? I wonder why they did that. It was a really cool music video in junior high with the little creature going all over the place. It got me hooked on them. I listened to their Sing the Sorrow album for a while and then moved onto the Art of Drowning. That was my new favorite by them. I never really took to their older, older stuff too much but I do like it. When I heard about decemberunderground, I couldn't wait for it to come out and the day it came out I picked it up. At first I didn't like it, because it was a new them. I didn't listen to it for a while. I picked them back up and they clicked instantly. It's definitely a good album. By far their best album cover too.
Green Day
The first time I heard about Green Day was, again, in Junior High and it was their "Minority." I have still yet to figure out how great that song really is. Every once in a while I go back to the lyrics, it's a pretty good song. I saw their video on MTV too and my friend and I knew about it before everyone else in my area. It was pretty cool. I listened to their album Warning for a while and then went back to the old stuff. Warning is my favorite album by them. American Idiot is the next. Everyone plays it down and says that they played them too much but it's still a masterpiece. My favorite song on that album is "Wake Me Up When September Ends." The video is genius.
System of a Down
System of a Down are musical geniuses who speak politics and life through their music, at least I believe so. They speak for themselves really if you have heard their songs. Sometimes playing the edgier lyrics they never cease to get some emotion out of me when I hear them. Their Mezmerize album was their better one out of their duet that they released. Just as it's hard to find a favorite artist, it's hard to find a favorite song from them. They're all good. "Old School Hollywood" comes first to my mind though.
Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy has a special place in my heart. I first saw them on Fuse (the better music channel) with their greatest song called "Grand Theft Autumn" more popularly known as "Where Is Your Boy?" I remember I would blast my stereo listening to their singles. When their second album came out I listened to their singles again and their videos were fun to watch. When Infinity On High came out I thought it was really good. It was the first one that I listened all the way through and I listened to it constantly. Doing homework, in the car going to school, and hanging out with friends. Then, I listened to their first album all the way through and was hooked on that. Finally, their second album all the way through. It's hard to say which one is the better one but if I had to choose which album I was going to put in the stereo, it'd probably be the second one. They speak great lyrics, though sometimes it's hard to put them together.
Taking Back Sunday
Taking Back Sunday was the band that got me through some hard times in High School and was one of the first albums that I listened to all the way through and took it all the lyrics apart. There would not be a day that I would go without listening to them, it's kind of interesting how I rarely turn their music on. They have all the snapshots and sound bites of emotional love songs. They're pretty catchy too. Doesn't seem like they're known so much now as they were before but they were pretty big. I think they still are.
