Charity: the art of helping people

Donate Life

The Donate Life story is actually becoming longer and longer by the day for the group around me. Last year, Long Beach Memorial sponsored a donor and we had about 4 or 5 people running and walking it. We made our own t-shirts and tried to pace ourselves the whole time that we run (this was when we were still training for the marathon). I remember that they had really good Jamba Juice there but only the strawberry was delicious.

Anyway, this year it's becoming a little bit more organized and we actually have a lot more people running and walking in it. We have a team of about 20 officially and non-officially registered for Long Beach Memorial and we have a separate team of 25 people running and walking right along side of us. I'm really excited to see how this one goes. Not to mention, how next year is going to go.

Breast Cancer Walk

In October we ran the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer walk. Sami, my mom, and I were running and walking along side 30 other people from Long Beach Memorial for our brave, loving, and kind survivor. We had a really great time and she was really cool. She gave Sami and I personal nicknames. The ceremony was really beautiful too, quite sad if you were there. They had doves too that were flying around which was awesome to see. I really want to get involved with the Revelon Breast Cancer Walk.

AIDS Walk LA

Last year Sami, my mom, and I walked the AIDS Walk last year and we're planning on doing it again this year. I say walked because we tried running it on numerous occasions and there was such a turn out of people that it was hard to get by anyone. At the end we settled for walking fast. It was my idea to go through with the run because I think it's a good cause. There are a lot of people affected by this, sometimes entire nations, despite personal views. We actually got to see some of the cast of Grey's Anatomy because we went. That was awesome. Not many that I know can say that and I know a lot of people who are fans of the show. Another thing that was funny about this run was all of a sudden someone says, "Ok, get ready to run the 10k" and we were like What? So, turns out we were running 6 miles instead of 3 like we thought.

Turkey Trot

Sami, my mom, and I had been doing a few charity runs for the past few months so we thought we would need one during the holidays. We weren't going to do one on Christmas because that's when we all get together, relax, and spend time with each other. So, we thought we would do one in the morning of Thanksgiving. We still get together but it's a nice way to prepare for the feast later on. We ran it the first time and loved the atmosphere, the people, and the organizations that were helped so we have been doing it every year.

CSULB Pyramid Run/Walk

For an extra credit assignment in my Jogging class we had the option of going to the first California State University, Long Beach pyramid run/walk to support the track team. Since it was the first event there weren't too many people that showed up but a lot of nice people. It was a 5k and there was a great announcer cheering runners and walkers on as they crossed the finish line. All the scores were posted online which was pretty neat. It was a nice, little event to go to and we are looking forward to the next one.
