REMOTE SENSING STUDIES OF THE NAVAN COMPLEX IN
NORTHERN IRELAND
In the summer of 1994, archaeologist Daniel O. Larson
(dlarson@beach.csulb.edu) and geophysicist Elizabeth
L. Ambos (bambos@beach.csulb.edu) of CSULB teamed with
archaeologist and remote sensing specialist Ken Kvamme of Boston University
(kvamme@crsa.bu.edu) and
archaeologist James Mallory and
paleoclimatologist Michael Baillie of Queen's University in
Belfast, Northern Ireland, archaeologist Chris Lynn of Environmental
Services, and archaeologist and historian Richard Warner of the Ulster
Museum, to find out more about the archaeology
of Navan Fort
complex near Armagh
City
in County Armagh, Northern
Ireland.
Using a combination of aerial photograph interpretation and
magnetometer and ground penetrating radar surveys of areas
directly adjacent to the Navan Research Centre, team
members were able to identify a variety of subsurface features
that had previously gone unnoticed.
