Admission Requirements and Procedures

Admission to the University

In order to be admitted to CSULB as a graduate student, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

1. Have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college;

2. Have been in good standing at the last institution attended;

3. Have at least a 2.5 grade-point average in the last 60 semester units attempted, independent of when the baccalaureate was granted. The entire semester or
quarter in which the 60 units began will be used in this calculation. Lower-division courses or courses taken in extension (except in adjunct enrollment at CSULB in
the upper division), after obtaining the bachelor's degree, will be excluded from the calculation.

Students wishing to enroll in the University must follow the instructions supplied by the Office of Enrollment Services.

NOTE: Graduating undergraduate CSULB students do not automatically continue as graduate students. They must apply under the same conditions as non-CSULB
students. Once applications are received, they will be evaluated at appropriate offices. To be admitted to the University, a student must also be admitted to the KPE
program. The University does not admit post-baccalaureate students who do not have a degree, certificate, or credential objective. Provisional admission is granted
to applicants anticipating their baccalaureate degree prior to registration but subsequent to filing the application. Proof of the baccalaureate is mandatory (final
transcript must be on file) prior to the student's second semester of attendance. If it is not, provisionally admitted students will be prohibited from future
enrollment until such proof is on file.

The student must request all institutions of higher learning attended (including CSULB) to send one official copy of transcripts directly to the Office of Enrollment
Services and one to the graduate coordinator. Transcripts presented to the Office of Enrollment Services by the student are not acceptable. Graduates of California
State University, Long Beach must follow these same procedures when making application to KPE.

All graduate and post baccalaureate applicants, regardless of citizenship, whose preparatory education was principally in a language other than English must
demonstrate competence in English. Those who possess a bachelor's degree from a post secondary institution where English is not the principal language of
instruction must receive a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Admission to the Department of KPE

In order to pursue a master's degree in Kinesiology, students must be accepted by the Department of KPE. Following review by the university, the department will
determine whether or not a student meets the requirements for admission to the specific degree option. A student who is admissible to the University but who does
not meet option requirements for admission may nevertheless be accepted as a conditionally classified graduate student by the department, subject to the proviso that
all remaining admission requirements of the program must then be fulfilled after enrollment. Only the Dean of Graduate Studies is authorized to grant conditional
admission to a student who does not meet University requirements, and such action will be taken only in rare and compelling circumstances.

Prerequisites
A bachelors degree from an accredited institution with a major in physical education or a bachelors degree and 24 units of upper division courses in Physical
Education composed of approved prerequisite courses needed for the tentative degree plan; a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.50 and a
minimum upper division Physical Education major grade point average of 2.75; a minimum cumulative score of 1350 on the general test (verbal quantitative and
analytical sections) of the Graduate Record Examination.
Applicants who do not have a baccalaureate degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, or a related field or who have not completed specific
undergraduate coursework will be required to complete a set of prerequisite courses that will be selected by the coordinator of each option area. The prerequisite
courses will be selected to adequately prepare the applicant for graduate coursework in their option area.

MATRICULATION

The candidate for the Master of Arts Degree in Physical Education is responsible for meeting both the University requirements as specified in the CSULB Bulletin
and in this Handbook. In addition the candidate is responsible for: (1) providing scores on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) to the Department Graduate
Advisor (2) completing a letter of intent and (3) scheduling an appointment with the Graduate Advisor to discuss the following: prerequisites (and courses it
necessary) requirements curriculum options and tracks in the Program the Writing Proficiency Examination requirement which is to be taken first semester of
graduate study Advancement to Candidacy requirements and a faculty advisor in the student's area of specialization.

Graduate Standing (Conditionally Classified)

a foreign university as determined by an appropriate campus authority;

2. have attained a grade-point average of at least 2.5 (A = 4.0) in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted;

3. have been in good standing at the last college attended; and

4. be accepted into the KPE graduate degree curriculum on a conditional basis, subject to the requirement that any deficiencies must be remedied by additional
preparation.

Graduate Standing (Classified)

A student who meets the minimum requirements for admission as a graduate student, as specified in the preceding paragraph, may be admitted as a fully classified
graduate student pursuing an authorized degree curriculum if the appropriate program authorities determine that he or she satisfactorily meets the professional,
personal, scholastic, or other standards for admission to the graduate degree curriculum, including qualifying examinations that the appropriate program authorities
may prescribe. Only those applicants who show promise of success and fitness will be admitted to graduate degree curricula, and only those who continue to
demonstrate a satisfactory level of scholastic competence and fitness shall be eligible to proceed in such curricula.

Special Action

In rare and compelling circumstances, an applicant who doesn't qualify for admission under the previous provisions may be admitted by special action if on
recommendation of the graduate coordinator and in the judgment of the Dean of Graduate Studies there exists acceptable evidence that the applicant possesses
sufficient academic, professional, and other potential pertinent to her/his educational objectives to merit such action, as shown through aptitude scores, recent
academic performance, and experiential background.

Graduation Requirement in Writing Proficiency (WPE)

All students must demonstrate competency in writing skills as a requirement for graduation. This is done by passing the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE).
Information on this graduation requirement may be obtained from Testing and Evaluation Services in the Student Services Building. Students must satisfactorily

tuition.

Change of Major/Option

Evaluation of credits transferred to the University is based in part upon the major/option indicated on the application for admission. Candidates desiring a change in
graduate option from that indicated on the original application must follow these procedures:

1. obtain a Petition to Change Objective form from the Office of Enrollment Services;

2. obtain the signatures of the faculty advisor, the graduate coordinator and/or the chair of the department

3. submit a graduate student program in the new option.

Withdrawal from the Degree Program

Students who have been admitted to candidacy for the master's degree and who complete no courses at this University within a calendar year without filing an
approved request for educational leave will be withdrawn from the graduate degree program.

If a student wishes to resume graduate study after withdrawal, the student must reapply to the University and request that the department initiate a petition to the
Dean of Graduate Studies to reinstate the student in his or her former graduate program. In the absence of an approved petition for reinstatement, the student must
