I would like to encourage everybody to sign up to be a member of the ASA (American Statistical Association).
The student fee is $10 for a year. With this you get many benefits and also help the Department.
First, you get 2 magazines: 1) Amstat News (this has all the listings of what is going in statistics and about regional and national conferences, 2) STATS (this is specifically for students and appications of statistics).
Second, by becoming a member, you get Access to the Members Only area of Amstat Online (www.amstat.org) including the new ASA JOBWEB where you can post your resume online!
Third, special discounted student subscription rates for all other ASA Publications.
Fourth, it looks very good on your resume to put "Member of the American
Statistical Association" under Professional Organizations.
Finally, if you put in my member ID (018202) under Were you referred by a current ASA member? under
Membership Information (near the top) when you join this gives me (the statistics group organizer) an additional $10 per student who joins to use to buy books for everybody to
share. Then we can all vote together on what new books we can buy and share using this money. Many of you currently sign out my books (or other professors), and we would like to form as big a statistics library for students to use as
possible
Finally, make sure to click on "Calculuate Discount" to have it listed as $10 for 1 year. (Actually, I talked to the member person at ASA and even though it may say $15 she assured me it is only $10 per person. It advertises $10 per year for student at the top of the member form. She said she is trying to get this fixed on the website, but again she assured me only $10 will be charged.
Please email me if you sign up.
Thank you.
Dr. Safer
