Description
A long way from our fort are the Appalachian Mountains. There, as can
be
seen on the map, three great rivers rise, and in the sands of these a
great deal of gold,
silver, and brass is found. The natives dig ditches in these streams,
into which the
sand brought by the current falls because of its weight. Little by little
they collect
the precious metals and bring them in canoes down the River of May, which
empties
into the sea. The Spaniards use the wealth thus obtained to great
advantage.
