Pictured here are storehouses belonging to an Eskimo tribe in Togiak, Alaska. Although many assume the Eskimo live exclusively in igloos, in parts of Alaska and many of the warmer coastal areas of Canada snow houses were not practical. Igloos required consistently cold temperatures to avoid any melting and dripping. Structures like the storehouses, as well as many Eskimo homes in other regions, were built from log planks, covered and insulated with sod. Racks were used for the storage of meat as well as for hanging the constantly wet clothing to dry.
