Jose Rizal is considered to be the national hero of the Philippines. He was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Philippines. From childhood, he was a child prodigy, already writing poems, drawing, and at the age of 16, he earned his Bachelors Degree in the Arts at Ateneo Municipal de Manila. Rizal learned many languages such as English, French and Germany. He traveled all over the world to Europe, Asia and America. He held many occupational titles such as Architecture, Optometrist, Linguist and Scientist. In 1887, he published his first novel, Noli Me Tangere. It was a work of literature that sparked rebellion among the Filipinos against the colonizing Spainards. "Mi Ultimo Adios" is Rizal's last literature piece, a poem that he wrote days before his execution at the end of 1896. It expresses his love for his mother country and his final farewell. |

Noli Me Tangere, Rizal's famous
novel, was published in 1886 in Spanish, the official language of the
Philippines at the time. However, the Spanish in the Philippines banned it
from the country because of it's strong opposition against the Spanish
government. It's sequel is
El Filibusterismo.
The title is Latin, meaning "Touch Me Not", a phrase that Jesus used in the New Testament of the Bible. The story is of a young Filipino who wants to build a school for the native Filipinos but his plans are attacked by the Spanish authority who did not want the natives to access knowledge. Rizal's message in this book was mainly for his fellow Filipinos to stand up and re-discover their self-worth. He also exposes the Spanish government's deceit and urges Filipinos to go back to their old traditions instead of following another culture's. |

Today, Fort Santiago stands as a museum where it also holds the Rizal Shrine. This shrine has replicas of objects that were around when Rizal died, such as the desk that he used to write "Mi Ulitmo Adios" |
