Software
Development Assistance Grants Program
Academic
Computing Services (ACS) offers award winning consultants and their
programming services to faculty. The ACS Software Development Assistance
Grants program seeks to make longer-term projects feasible by allocating
significant ACS resources in an orderly way. Faculty members are
invited to submit proposals for these services in such areas as:
web page authoring, digital imaging, streaming media, computer programming
and authoring, web site development, database support for web pages,
and video-audio production. To see several projects supported under
this program, see our Faculty Showcase.
Software
Development Services
Developing instructional software is an iterative, team-based
process. Teams include the faculty member and technical staff
from ACS determined by the nature of the proposed program. Goals
and objectives of the program are clarified and tasks are delineated,
sequenced, and assigned among team members. Software creation
follows an instructional systems development model.
The resulting production may consist of course materials accessible
via the Internet, a networked application, or a stand-alone application
in the form of a diskette or CD-ROM. ACS can help the faculty
member decide which application best meets the needs of the students
while keeping in mind the overall implications of any development
project. Note that ACS expects to be credited in any publications
resulting from such projects. All university policies pertaining
to copyright and intellectual property must be adhered to.
ACS Software Development Assistance Grants consist of services
only: no funds, hardware, or commercial software are to be awarded.
Longer-term projects are here defined as those requiring a week
or longer of person hours in technical support. All faculty will
have an equal opportunity to submit requests for project support.
The ACS Mission Statement, the CSULB Vision 2001 and the CSULB
Strategic Priority provide the foundation for this program.
Procedure
Each academic year, faculty who are considering projects requiring
extensive ACS resources and/or ACS staff participation may submit
brief (1-3 page) pre- proposals for ACS Software Development Assistance
Grants. See document ACS-804 below for the form structure. The
deadline for these applications will be March 1, 2004. The pre-proposals
will be reviewed by the ACS Faculty Services group for appropriateness,
resource availability, and technical feasibility. Requests will
also be reviewed by the Director of ACS. ACS will forward the
pre-proposals with comments to a Faculty Review Committee approved
by the ACS Advisory Committee.
The Review Committee will assign each pre-proposal to one of the
following three categories:
1. Pre-proposals which are within the scope of the program and
are clearly meritorious: submitters are encouraged to develop
a full proposal;
2. Pre-proposals which are within the scope of the program but
are judged to be in need of significant revision to be acceptable:
submitters may proceed as they choose;
3. Pre-proposals which are outside the scope of the project: submitters
are discouraged.
Pre-proposals will be returned with comments to the submitter
by April 2 , 2004. The submitters of the pre-proposals will then
have untilMay 3, 2004 to develop and submit a full proposal, which
will be reviewed by the same committee. Awardees of grants will
be notified byJune 1, 2004. Faculty members who are considering
writing proposals may contact Academic Computing Services at 985-5920
for help in tailoring their proposals to meet realistically the
resources that are available.
