Mission Statement


The mission of Academic Computing Services is to plan, develop, implement, maintain, and manage in a cost-effective manner those information technologies and resources necessary to facilitate the teaching-learning process among faculty and students and the acquisition of knowledge through instructionally related research, scholarly publications, and creative works.



Vision Statement

ACS will continue to provide the same kind of services we do now, consulting, training, planning, etc., but to a much larger and broader audience as the computer becomes a common tool of all disciplines. Academic Computing will provide the University with access to high end computing resources and the technical expertise to apply the technology to the teaching and learning process.



Strategic Goals

  1. Maintain central location with state-of-the-art equipment and software, accessible to faculty and students over campus networks. Upgrade equipment as necessary to meet demand for high end computing. 
  2. Set strategic direction in computing through research and analysis of the latest technology and trends. Make recommendations on appropriate technology to meet end user.
  3. Set standards for appropriate technologies and pursue innovative procurement strategies to help reduce the cost of ownership.
  4. Set standards for user interfaces for the campus to assist users in accessing resources and reduce training time.
  5. Provide consulting and training on supported technologies 
  6. Use knowledge and expertise of learning strategies and technology to assist faculty in applying technology to their programs 
  7. Keep the user community informed about technological trends and opportunities for instruction. Help them to use the emerging technology to improve teaching and learning.
  8. Develop instruments for measuring trends in the user community in order to monitor the effectiveness of support programs.
  9. Create an information infrastructure which easily facilitates exchange of electronic information among all members of the university community and the universe.

 

The ACS Advisory Committee

    • To sustain and nurture the integration of ACS with the overall mission of California State University, Long Beach
    • To represent faculty, administrators, students, and the community in internal discussions of instructional technology planning
    • To perform tasks in association with the ACS Director
    • To be the consultative body on ACS policies and services
    • To represent ACS to other constituencies, especially to faculty, staff, and students
    • To act as a liaison to the Academic Senate, Staff Council, Associated Students, etc.


The voting members of the Advisory Committee shall serve a term of one year and shall be chosen jointly by the Chair of the Academic Senate (in consultation with the Executive Committee) and the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The membership shall be composed as follows:

  • Faculty members (N=8) nominated by the Executive Committee (1 per college with the exception of 2 for Liberal Arts)
  • Chair of the Academic Senate (or designee from the Executive Committee)
  • Staff Member (nominated by the Staff Council)
  • Student (nominated by the President of the Associated Students)
  • Director of the Center for Faculty Development

The voting membership consists of the above 12 positions. In addition, the following four positions shall be ex officio non-voting members of the Advisory Committee:

  • Director of Academic Computing Services
  • Assistant Vice President for Technology, Academic Affairs
  • Assistant Vice President of Operations, Academic Affairs
  • Director of the University Library and Learning Resources
