Dr. Carl
W. McIntosh
(September 1959-February 1969)
Dr. Carl W. McIntosh became the second
president of California State University, Long Beach when he succeeded
Dr. P. Victor Peterson in 1959. Like Dr. Peterson he served the
university as its president for 10 years.
Dr. McIntosh was born in 1914 in
Redlands, California. He received the bachelor of arts degree from
the University of Redlands and the degrees master of arts and doctor
of philosophy from the State University of Iowa.
From 1937-38 he was an instructor
in speech at Park College, Missouri and served as acting head of
the department of speech. He joined the faculty of the University
of Idaho's Southern Branch at Pocatello in 1939 as an instructor
in speech, advanced to assistant professor the following year and
to associate professor in 1946 soon after he returned from service
with the United States Army in England, France, Germany and Belgium.
Dr. McIntosh became acting executive
dean in 1946, and when the university branch was granted independent
status and changed to Idaho State College in March 1947 he was named
acting president. In June of that year he was appointed dean of
the college, and in November he became president. He was then 32
years old.
He served as chief executive of Idaho
State until he resigned to take the presidency of Long Beach State.
Dr. McIntosh served as chairman of
the Higher Commission of the Northwest Association of Secondary
and High Schools, as a member of the Western Interstate Commission
for Higher Education, as a member of the Rocky Mountain Regional
Advisory Committee to the Institute for International Education,
and as a member of the Board of Visitors for the Air University.
The University of Redlands awarded
him an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1952. Dr. McIntosh assumed
the presidency of Montana State University in 1970 and retired in
1977. |
