C. Maxson
(June 1994-present)
Dr. Robert C. Maxson assumed his
duties as president of California State University, Long Beach on
June 1, 1994. Prior to that appointment, he served as president
of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), a position he held
for 10 years (1984-94).
Under Dr. Maxson's leadership, Cal
State Long Beach has established a program to actively recruit the
most academically talented high school students in the state. The
program, called 49er Express, is designed to recruit California
valedictorians and National Merit Scholars. A $25,000 four-year
scholarship is offered to high school valedictorians in the state
of California to attend CSULB. A $35,000 four-year scholarship is
offered to all National Merit Scholars. The program is already successful
with approximately 250 California high school valedictorians and
National Merit Scholars having enrolled at the university.
President Maxson has stated that
he thinks Cal State Long Beach, where enrollment is approaching
30,000 students, will become one of the top urban universities in
the world.
President Maxson earned his doctorate
from Mississippi State University in 1970. That institution honored
him as its Distinguished Alumnus in the spring of 1990. He has written
two college textbooks which together have been adopted in approximately
100 universities. He has also written numerous articles which has
been published in a wide variety of scholarly journals.
Dr. Maxson has been named Man of
the Year by the National Conference of Christians and Jews and by
the American Jewish Committee. He was awarded the prestigious Silver
Lily Award by the Easter Seal Society for his humanitarian deeds.
He has also served on corporate boards such as Bank of America Nevada
and Houston Security Bank. Currently, he serves on the Board of
Directors of International City Bank.
President Maxson is married to Dr.
Sylvia Parrish Maxson. Their son Todd is a pediatric surgeon in
Austin, Texas and their daughter Kimberly has a law degree and is
a Deputy District Attorney in Las Vegas. |
