Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 50th Anniversary all about? Our 50th anniversary will provide a unique opportunity to celebrate the University's excellence as we reflect on our past and look toward the future. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and our neighbor ing communities can all join together to mark our contributions to the academic and professional development of thousands of students as well as our role in the economic development of the State of California.

How long will it last? The 50th Anniversary observances and celebration will be sustained over three semesters: Spring 1999, Fall 1999, and Spring 2000. During the Spring 1999 semester we will reflect on our history and how we have become what we are, during Fall of 1999 we will showcase the varied talents and qualities of our current faculty, staff, students, and alumni, and during the Spring of 2000 we will stimulate discussion of our future by bringing national leaders in higher education to our campus.

What major events will the University sponsor? We will begin with a Founders Day Convocation in the Pyramid on January 29, featuring an aca demic procession; music, performance, and video; a keynote address; greetings from notable ofli cials; and a luncheon reception. For Spring of 2000, a symposium on Pathways to Excellence in Higher Education will explore educational policy for the 21st century. Other events like the Odyssey theme-year, Homecoming, Staff Day, Kaleidoscope, athletic events, the Alumni Banquet, and Com mencement will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CSULB in a variety of ways.

What are the ways for a department or organization to participate? Academic departments, student groups, staff organizations, emeritus faculty and staff, and commu nity partners are invited to plan events, receptions, and activities which have a theme related to the celebration. Existing campus programs like Women's History Month, Black History Month, Depart mental Colloquia, etc. are encouraged to embrace the 50th birthday celebration by focusing on the contributions that have made the success of the university over the last 50 years. All are welcome to submit new events to the Steering Committee for inclusion in this campus-wide celebration.

What is the next step? We need information about events which you will be augmenting or creating for the 50th Anniver sary Celebration. In order to coordinate publicity efforts effectively, we will maintain a "master calendar" of events which can be publicized both on and off campus. If you are planning to augment an existing campus event or create a new event, please contact the 50th Anniversary office at 562/ 985-4546.

How do I schedule a new event? If you have ideas about a new event or program which you would like to add to the 50th Anniversary celebration (e.g., a departmental alumni reception, a film from the '50s, a dance featuring period music, a photo exhibit, a guest speaker or symposium) fill out the attached form and return it to the 50th Anniversary Events Committee office. Check the master calendar (located on the campus web site under "What's Hot" to make sure you are not conflicting with another event, and let us know if you need information about scheduling events on campus. You will be responsible for financial support of your event.

Whom do I contact for more information? If you have questions, please contact Michael Blazey, Faculty Coordinator, at mblazey@csulb.edu or Jessica Nelson, Program Assistant at (562) 985-4546.
