Homecoming '99. This year's homecoming week will begin Tuesday, Feb.16 and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 20 with a men's basketball game in The Pyramid. In conjunction with CSULB's 50th anniversary celebration which began in January, the theme for Homecoming '99 is "50 Years of 49er Pride." Some of the activities for the week include a banner and free throw contest, BBQ, concert and a pep rally with the introduction of the Homecoming court. President Robert C. Maxson, Associated Students President Christy Zamani and Associated Students Sports and Spirit Commissioner Dani Dawson will preside over the event.
   On Saturday, Feb. 20 there will be a tailgate beginning at 2 p.m. in the parking area outside of The Pyramid's gold entrance. Among the activities taking place will be a pie-eating and free throw shooting contests, and a "Dance of Each Decade" dance contest with the alumni band "The Chris Harvey Band" performing. In addition, there will be a judging of decorated cars and banners, a lip-sync contest and the crowning of the 1999 homecoming king and queen.
    Also as part of homecoming, at 5 p.m. the men's basketball team will host Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference game in The Pyramid. Game and meal packages are available for $20 through the Alumni Relations Office and Homecoming '99 t-shirts with the 50th anniversary logo are available for $10 in the 49er bookstore . Festival of the Arts. The College of the Arts will conduct its Third Annual Festival of the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts. This evening of artistic entertainment and visual surprises is offered free to the public by the college as a way of thanking the community for their support of the college's programs. Dance, film, music, theatre, visual art and design come together in this gala celebration of the year's most exciting student work from the College of the Arts.
    Tickets for the Festival of the Arts are free to the public, however, reservations must be made by calling the Arts Ticket Office at (562) 985-7000. The Carpenter Performing Arts Center is located on the CSULB campus at 6200 Atherton Street, between Bellflower Boulevard and Palo Verde Avenue. Parking is in Lot 12, accessed directly off Atherton and only steps away from the center's doors. Top

29th Annual Pow Wow. Scheduled for March 13-14, 1999. California State University, Long Beach's 29th Annual Pow Wow, a Native American Indian celebration, returns to the campus' central quad on Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14. Admission and parking are free. The two-day event featuring Native American dancing, arts, crafts and foods begins at 11 a.m. each day and runs until 11 p.m. on Saturday and 7 p.m. on Sunday. The largest spring event of its kind in Southern California, the primary goal of the CSULB Pow Wow is to display the university's strong American-Indian presence. Staff Day activities on Wednesday, March 31, will begin with the annual Fun-Run Walk around the campus at 7 a.m. Participants should meet on the blue side of The Pyramid. A variety of events will occur from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nugget Plaza. Staff member Jim Long and vocalist Mary Llanes will provide live music while attendees can enjoy lunch and explore the vendors' booths. There will also be prizes given away.
    "Founders Day brought out feelings of nostalgia and we would like to expand on that for Staff Day," says Rodger Rhoades, chair of Staff Council's Special Events Committee. "We hope to have instructions in swing and line dancing if we can locate people willing to teach." If you know of someone, please call him at ext. (562) 985-4255. The lunch, for $4.50, includes a salad, soft drink and choice of a Panda rice bowl or vegetarian pasta. Also, special 50th Anniversary staff T-shirts and sweatshirts will be sold prior to the event. Kick off for Dodger Night Website: Would you like to go to bat for CSULB? Persons who are interested in being a ticket seller for CSULB Dodger Night on April 21 are asked to attend the kick-off meeting on Friday, Feb. 26, at noon in the North Campus Library conference room. All pertinent information for the volunteer representatives will be distributed at the meeting. Ticket sellers will be given two complimentary tickets to another game in the 1999 season, and those who sell 100 tickets or more will receive additional benefits including participation in the pregame ceremony on the field. CSULB Dodger Night will celebrate the university's 50th anniversary at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game against the Atlanta Braves. The pregame ceremony at 7 p.m. will focus on CSULB; the women's volleyball team will be introduced and President Robert C. Maxson will throw out the first ball. CSULB Kaleidoscope '99. Scheduled for Saturday, April 24. Family-style fun returns to California State University, Long Beach with Kaleidoscope '99. One of Southern California's most popular family-oriented festivals, the event will be held campus-wide from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Two hours of Kaleidoscope will be broadcast live on Charter Communications Cable (channel 3 in Long Beach). Alumni Banquet '99. CSULB To Salute Its Own At Alumni Banquet On May 24, 1999. The California State University, Long Beach Alumni Association will host its annual Alumni Awards Banquet on Monday, May 24, at a site to be determined. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and awards program at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the banquet to support those being honored. Commencement. More than 6,000 students will be awarded degrees at the 50th annual commencement ceremonies at California State University, Long Beach. Individuals will receive their bachelorÕs or masterÕs degrees during nine ceremonies from Wednesday, May 26 through Friday, May 28 in the central quad of the campus.
   The May 26 schedule begins at 9 a.m. with the College of Business Administration ceremony, followed by ceremonies for the College of Health and Human Services at 1 and 5 p.m. The College of Liberal Arts has two ceremonies on May 27 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the College of Engineering closing out the day with its ceremony beginning at 5 p.m.
    May 29 ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. for the College of the Arts, followed at 1 p.m. for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and at 5 p.m. for the College of Education and Liberal Studies.
    Free parking is available for commencement guests in Lots 14, 16 and 17 on the north campus, with courtesy shuttles available. Visitors may enter the campus from Atherton Street, Bellflower Boulevard or Seventh Street. Before parking, drivers may drop off passengers at the west turnaround near Brotman Hall or the east turnaround by the CSULB Foundation Building. Parking for the disabled may be arranged by calling parking administration at 562/985-4146.

Jewels of the Night is sponsored by the 49er Athletic Association, will be held on Sat., June 5, 1999. We will celebrate the 50th anniversary with our theme "Back to 1949". Dance to the tunes of Swing music with our live entertainment Tuff Enough. We have over 50 local restaurants who will serve dinner, silent and live auction, dancing. We have had over 1,000 people attend in the past two years. The money we raise will will benefit the student-athlete scholarshp program. This event has been sold out the past two years. Ticket prices vary from $60 per person with tables going from $600 for a table of ten to $7,500 for a corporate sponsorship. Reservations are a must. We discourage ticket sales at the door. CSULB's Concerts in the Grove. Kicks Off July 10. The annual summer Concerts in the Grove series at CSULB begins in July and runs through August. One of the university's most anticipated events, Concerts in the Grove will again provide a variety of musical and vocal sounds.
   All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in the garden setting of the Soroptimist House inside the campus entrance at 1250 Bellflower Boulevard. Gates open at 6 p.m. so that concert-goers may bring and enjoy picnic dinners. Admission prices are $12, $15, and $18. The summer line-up is (all Saturdays): July 10: Murfy's Law Ð 70s classic rock n' roll; July 17: Johnny Fabulous and The Big Shots Ð swing music; July 31: Tommy Tassi and the Authentics - pop hits from the 1950s and 1960s; August 7: BackBeat Ð a Beatles cover band; and August 21: The Blast Ð hits from the 80s and 90s.
