MDPT (Mathematics Diagnostic Placement Test) Guide
The MDPT is being used as a diagnostic test to place students into an appropriate level math class, one that they can achieve success and understand the concepts that are being presented.
This test is mandatory for freshmen who want to take Math 119A or Math 122.
Students who took the MDPT during Summer 2009 or student who are currently enrolled in, and passing the prerequisite to the above mathematics courses are exempt from taking the MDPT. In the future the MDPT will become a mandatory test for all incoming freshmen.
MDPT test for students in Science Safari to Success on June 26, 2009:
The MDPT will be offered to students signed up for the Science Safari to Success
on June 26. This test is mandatory if you wish to enroll in Math 119A
or Math 122 during the Fall 2009 semester.
THIS TEST DATE IS FOR SCIENCE SAFARI TO SUCCESS STUDENTS ONLY.
The MDPT will be administered at (to be announced) in (to be announced).
The test takes about 2 hours to administer and you will not be allowed to leave early.
Please bring pencils and photo ID. Calculators are not allowed.
Students without photo ID or late arrivals might not be admitted and will have to reschedule their test to a later date. Please arrive early.

The MDPT will be offered on the following days at 9:00AM in
FO3 room 200A:
- June 12, 2009
- June 19, 2009
- July 10, 2009
- August 14, 2009
Please arrive 10 minutes early since late arrivals might not be admitted.
Plan to be there for the full duration of the test. You will not be allowed to leave early, even when you are done.
Please bring valid Photo ID, pencils & eraser. Calculators are not allowed.
The test results can be used to enroll in a Mathematics course offered during the Fall 2009 semester.
The next opportunity to take the MDPT will be during the Fall 2009 semester.
As an incoming freshman to CSULB you must complete at least one General Education (GE) math course. Which course or courses you will be required to complete will depend on your major. Check out Majors & GE Math.
The MDPT results are only valid for one year.
- If you take the test in the Summer, the results are valid through the following Summer.
- Starting next year, if you do not take a class within the year, you must take the MDPT again.
- You may only retake the MDPT once, but you must wait until the next semester before retaking the test. (Example: You originally take the test during the Spring semester or during the Summer sessions, you must wait until the Fall semester to retake the test.)
