Professor and Chair of Economics

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE AND RELATED PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

                  a.  Academic Administration and Related Activities

Chair, Department of Economics, 1982-present.  The Chair is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Department.  Overall responsibilities involve developing and managing a curriculum consisting of 17 full-time faculty and 15 part-time faculty members servicing approximately 600 FTES annually; supervising staff personnel; managing the department's fiscal resources; long-range forecasting of human and fiscal resources; and recruiting faculty and staff.

Director, Office of Economic Research, California State University, Long Beach 1990-present.  The Director coordinates and serves as a primary researcher in the preparation of the annual economic forecast of the Southern California Regional Economy.  The forecast addresses national, state and local economic performance.

Director, Master of Arts in Global Logistics,  California State University, Long Beach , 2001-present.  The Master of Arts in Global Logistics is a multidisciplinary program invloving the departments of Economics, Civil Engineering, Information Systems, Management, and Public Policy and Administration. 

Member, Executive Commiteee, Metrans: A Transportation Research Center, University of Southern California-California State University, Long Beach, 2002-present.  Metrans is a U.S. Department of Transportation funded transporation research center.  Metrans funds approximately $1 million of faculty research annually, focusing on goods movement.

Member, Advisory Board, Center for International Trade and Transportation, University Colllege Extension Services, California State University, Long Beach, 1999-present.  The Center for International Trade and Transporation serves as a link with the business community and other stakeholders for Metrans.

Acting Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Outreach, School of Business Administration, 1987. The Associate Dean serves as the academic administrator in charge of faculty recruitment and development, enrollment and curriculum management, and community outreach.  The School is composed of 117 FTEF serving approximately 2400 FTES per semester.

Director, Center for Economic Education, 1986-87.  Center activities involve assisting school districts in the curricular development of economics programs at the primary and secondary level.  Fiscal support is obtained through extramural grant activities.  The primary thrust of the Center is to support the implementation of SB 1213 which requires a one semester high school course in economics.

                  b.  Professional Activities

Expert Witness, 1980-present, California (Los Angeles Superior Court, Orange County Superior Court, Long Beach Superior Court, Riverside Superior Court, and San Bernardino Superior Court) and Nevada (Clark County Superior Court).  Provide expert testimony regarding the valuation of economic loss which arise from a personal injury or wrongful death.  Evaluation of assets involved in the dissolution of marital contracts.

Principal, Economic Forecasting Group, 2003-present.  Economic Forecasting Group is a consulting firm providing regional economic forecasting and analysis to local governments, economic partnerships and private firms.

Member, Council on California Competitiveness, Capital and Economic Incentives Committee, 1992.  Govenor Wilson created the Council on California Competeiveness, headed by Peter Ueberroth and composed of business and civic leaders as well as academics, to devlop a series of recommendations to retain and attract businesses to the state.

Member, Advisory Board of Task Force studying the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Second Amendment Foundation, 1978-1979. 

                  c.  Community Activities

Member, Long Beach, Inc., 2002-present.  Long Beach, Inc., formerly Long Beach Strategic Marketing Inc., is a private-public partnership founded by Beverly O’Neill and Chris Pook.  The mission of Long Beach, Inc. is to retain and attract businesses in Long Beach.  Long Beach, Inc., recently changed their meeting schedule from monthly to bimonthly.                                                                                                                         

Director, Board of Directors, Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, 2004-present.  Serve as the University’s representative to the Chamber.  The Chamber’s Directors meet monthly.

Member, Business Vitality Council, Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, 2001-2005. Initially seved as a consultant and then as a member of the Council.  One of the outcomes of our research work led the Council to pursue the development of a new high school, with the cooperation of the Santa Ana Unified School District.  The new school would involve a joint effort by business and the school district to target students not intending to pursue higher education.  The curriculm would focus on the development of workplace skills. 

                  d.  Other Activities

Director, Board of Directors, Forty-Niner Shops, Inc., 1995-2001.  Served as one of two faculty members on a nine  member board.  The Forty-Niner Shops is a financial auxiliary of the California State University, Long Beach.  The campus bookstore and food services are managed by the Shops.  Gross revenues are approximately $22 million annually.

Director, Board of Directors, Century City Savings and Loan Association, 1987-1989.  Served as one of two outside members on a nine member board.  Century City Savings was a small financial institution with assets of $20-$30 million.  The Association was undercapitalized and the board worked closely with management to convince the shareholders that they either recapitalize or sell the Association.  After addressing problems with the portfolio and related matters the Association was sold at the end of 1989.

Chair, Finance Committee, Holy Family Cathedral School, Orange, California, 1991-1993.  The Finance Committee develops financial policy and oversees the budget of $1,800,000 - $2,000,000.

Chair, Finance Council, Holy Family Cathedral, Orange, California, 1993-2004.  The Finance Council develops financial policy and oversees the parish budget of approximately $2,400,000.
