Summer at Sea 2001

Golden Bear - California Maritime Academy

Enjoy a two-month cruise to the Pacific islands and Asia and earn up to ten units in Summer 2001. The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies will offer eight courses aboard the training ship, the Golden Bear, from June 20 to August 21, with a view to providing students with short-term international educational opportunities. The federal government has provided the Golden Bear to the California Maritime Academy (CMA), one of the 23 campuses of the California State University System, for the purpose of training the future merchant marine. For the past few years, CMA has allowed other CSU students to participate in the cruise to take non-CMA courses, such as Mathematics and Sciences, while enjoying a short-term international experience.
For Summer 2001, the Golden Bear is scheduled to depart from Honolulu and visit Yap Island, Cebu (the Philippines), Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sasebo (Japan), Midway Islands, and Kona, returning to Vallejo, California, where the training ship is based. The ship will stay one to three days at each port to allow students to conduct field trips and/or to do sightseeing.
We will offer the following courses in Chinese and Japanese aboard the Golden Bear:
- Chinese 101 Fundamentals of Chinese (4 units)
- Chinese 102 Fundamentals of Chinese (4units)
- Chinese 499 Directed Studies (4units)

The CMA tour fee includes room and board on the Golden Bear and a charter flight from San Francisco to Honolulu, document fees, medical fees (includes drug screening), Associated Students fee, uniform, administrative fees, Familiarization Course, and Basic Safety Training Course.* In addition, all students have to pay for their round trip between their residence and the CMA campus in Vallejo, California, where they need to stay in a residence hall for four days to take a 40-hour lifesaving certification course prior to the shipÕs departure. These expenses consist of $60 ($15 x 4 days) in dorm fees and variable amounts in airfare and ground transportation, depending on where students reside. The student will cover other personal expenses such as travel on days off, additional food and drink, etc.
*Note for Spring 2001 CSU-matriculated students:
Spring 2001 CSU-matriculated students may register concurrently in the Spring 2001 term for CRS 390 at CMA (includes administrative fees, Familiarization Course, and Basic Safety Training Course) and deduct $480 from the CMA tour fee listed above.
