Three Long Beach State (LBSU) athletes will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 11-14 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.
Junior Chris Low, who established a school-record 1:47.52 in the 800m at the NCAA West Preliminary last weekend, enters the national championships with a No. 8 ranking, while sophomores Willie Alexander (long jump) and Chris Enriquez (10,000m) are both ranked 16th in their respective events.
“I believe that Willie and Chris Low are capable of winning an NCAA title before they leave Long Beach State,” 49er head coach Andy Sythe said. “They are that good and both are only scratching their potential athletically. These guys are beginning to become household names and are respected for their competitive spirit and ability.
“Chris Enriquez is a surprising star on the rise,” Sythe added. “Although he has already proven himself in cross country by qualifying for the 2013 NCAA Championships, he is still young in the 10K and may be an even bigger surprise at nationals next week.”
With LBSU’s strong performance at the West Preliminary last weekend, the 49er men jumped 33 spots to No. 77 in the latest U.S. Track Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings. They were the highest ranked program out of the Big West.
The Beach men were also fifth in the final USTFCCCA West Region rankings, which were released on May 20. They finished ahead of Pac-12 members Washington, Arizona, UCLA, Washington State and Stanford.
