First Annual Economics Poster Competition and Exhibit

In May 2012, the Economics Department held the first Annual Economics Poster Competition and Exhibit. Undergraduate and graduate students were invited to design posters displaying their research efforts on any topic in economics. A faculty committee judged the posters, which were on exhibit to the public, similar to poster sessions at professional conferences. About 40 students participated, with a total of 16 posters entered in the contest. Jorge-Arturo Alvarez, Penelope Chan, Lee DePicciotto and Aaron Holz won third place for “Urban Heat Islands”; Maria Dulce Bulla, Odessa Reyno, Kristin Swart and Nina Whitsett won second place for “Methane Emissions in Landfills vs. Stationary Combustion for the State of California”; and Kalvin Tran won first place for “Attainment Status of Region to Influence SO2 Emissions for Coal-Fired Power Plants.” The poster competition was an overwhelming success, and we plan on holding the second annual competition in May 2013.
