Athletes Vie for Olympic Glory

Ten Long Beach State alumni from volleyball, swimming and track took part in this summer’s Olympics in London, joining a host of Long Beach State athletes, coaches and officials who have participated in every summer games since 1952 and in two winter games.

The beach volleyball team of alumna Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won their third consecutive gold medal in defeating the other Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross.

“Kerri and I wanted to go down as the best team in history,” May-Treanor said in a post-match NBC interview. She is married to baseball catcher Matt Treanor and announced that she is retiring from competition to focus on her family and future.

Beijing silver medalist Danielle Scott-Arruda competed in her fifth Olympics, joined by Athens and Beijing games teammate Tayyiba Haneef-Park in contributing to another silver medal finish in a rematch with Brazil.

Alum and 49er men’s volleyball head coach Alan Knipe took a leave from CSULB to coach the defending gold medal men’s indoor team that included Beijing Olympic veteran David Lee as well as first-time Olympians Paul Lotman and David McKienzie. The team lost to Italy in the quarterfinals.Alum and USC head swimming coach Dave Salo was an assistant USA women’s swimming coach.

Former 49er runner Kenneth Medwood earned a spot on the Belize Olympic track and field team and the honor of carrying its flag in the Opening Ceremony before making it into the men’s 400-meter hurdles semifinals. Past runner Magnolia Howell took part in the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic trials.

Seven current and past 49er athletes attempted to become Olympians during the U.S. Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. Matt Maldonado made it into the 1500 meter run semifinals, while Tyler Wallace competed in men’s pole vault, Ben Woodruff in men’s javelin, Chris Lawson in men’s 400 meter hurdles and Colin Dunbar in hammer throw. Randi Hicks competed in women’s javelin.
