Former CSULB Acting President June Cooper Dies

June M. Cooper, former acting president of CSULB and retired executive vice chancellor of the California State University system, died Jan. 10 at the age of 78.

CSULB administrators noted that the campus benefited greatly from Cooper’s leadership. After earning university degrees in New York, she joined the Cal State Long Beach Department of Communicative Disorders faculty in 1966. During the next 25 years, she served in a variety of assignments including department chair, associate vice president for academic affairs–academic personnel, acting vice president for academic affairs, vice president for faculty and staff relations, vice president for student services, and acting president following President Stephen Horn.

In 1991, Cooper moved to the CSU Office of the Chancellor as vice chancellor for human resources and operations and later served as executive vice chancellor and chief of staff.

Cooper also was very active in the community. She served on the boards of directors for Volunteers of America, Long Beach Memorial Medical Health Services, American Heart Association, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, National Conference for Community and Justice, Public Corporation for the Arts, American Cancer Society, Leadership Long Beach, Leadership California and more.
