Huong Tran Nguyen, Ph.D.

Prior to becoming a faculty member at CSULB, Dr. Nguyen brought over 21 years of experience as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, English language development specialist, professional development leader, and program specialist (administrator) in grades K-12 in three California urban public school districts. In 1994, while teaching at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, she was selected by her peers as National Outstanding Teacher of the Year and National Outstanding Teacher of Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language, an event sponsored by Disney in Washington, DC. Subsequently, she was invited to serve as a senior fellow (1995-96) at the U.S. Department of Education under the leadership of U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley during President Clinton's administration.

Her research interests include: social-cultural contexts of teaching; models of teacher education and professional development; educators’ development of a professional identity; intersectionality and manifestations of social constructs in school and society; and access to core curriculum for culturally and linguistically diverse students in public schools.
