Stephen Benson Learning Disability Program

The Stephen Benson Program (SBP) for Students with Learning Disabilities was created in 1980 to serve the needs of CSULB students who have a diagnosed learning disability.

A learning disability (LD) is a permanent disorder affecting the way individuals with average or above average intelligence take in, retain, or express information. Learning disabilities can interfere with a student’s ability to assimilate or process information. This can impact academic performance. Students who have not previously been tested for a learning disability nor received special education services in K-12 (served under an IEP or 504 Plan) or academic accommodations at another college, may be eligible for a comprehensive psycho-educational assessment through the Stephen Benson Program’s (SBP) on-campus testing services. Comprehensive assessment for eligible students consists of a 6-8 hour process that includes an intake interview, 3 assessment sessions and a final results meeting.

1. If you have been previously diagnosed with a disabling condition or received services under an IEP or 504 Plan, you can register with BMAC and upload your verification documentation. If you do not have any documentation of your disability, you can have your treating professional complete the BMAC Disability Verification form.

2. Students who are already registered with BMAC and receiving accommodations for another disability generally would not be candidates for a comprehensive LD assessment. If you believe you need additional accommodations related to learning difficulties, you should contact the BMAC front desk at (562) 985-5401 and request a follow-up appointment with a specialist.
