A total of 2,856 students responded to the e-mail asking them to complete the survey for about a 10% response rate. However, not all students who accessed the survey completed it. Students were was required to click on a button at the end of the survey to record all answers. No answers were recorded until the button was clicked.

A total of 1,853 students did complete the survey. For web-based surveys, this is an acceptable response rate. No identifying data were recorded, so it is not possible to tell how representative the sample is of all CSULB students. However, nearly all students who completed the survey included open-ended comments. Printed transcripts of all student comments ran to more than 100 single-spaced pages. The analysis of these comments revealed a wide range of opinions that suggested a varied student sample had been obtained.
