Employee Ranking of Strategies for Institutional Success

Theme 1: Educational Effectiveness (Spring 2006 Campus WASC Survey)

The percentage of employees assigning first through fifth priorities to each of the ten strategies is shown in Table 1.  The strategies are ranked by the percentage of first priority votes received from all CSULB employees.

  • Creating a vision for success garnered the highest percentage of first priority votes (26.5%).  Another 11.2% of employees rated it as their second priority, with an additional 7.8% rating it third priority, 6.1% rating it as fourth priority, and 7.6% rating it as fifth priority.  Over 40% of employees, however, rated it as not important.  This indicates a wide difference of opinion (high variability) on this strategy.
  • Addressing and solving problems garnered the second highest percentage of first place votes (22.1%), as well as fewer dissenting votes (31% indicating it is not a priority).

  • Establishing strategic priorities fell into third place, with 15.3% of all employees rating it as the top priority. This was closely followed by the complementary strategies of Managing Growth and Managing the Budget.
  • Updating Technology fell into sixth place, followed Program review and assessment in seventh place.
  • The remaining three strategies were not top priorities for more than half the employees responding to the survey.
