California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) has recognized the need to provide an up-to-date, state of the art instructional laboratory space for the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. This need stems from previous studies that have shown it would not be cost effective to upgrade the existing Peterson Hall 3 building.
Built in the early Sixties, the existing facility has outlived its useful life. The existing structure is “cast-in-place” concrete, ductile frame, which does not meet today’s structural requirements or CSU classroom building standards. The utility services to this facility have not kept up with the current instructional requirements, forcing the faculty and staff to order specialty gasses and water in costly cylinder exchange programs. The floor to floor heights are too low to retrofit a modern cost-effective MEP system. It has become clear that this existing facility no longer meets the needs of the occupants.
The work for this project consists of the abatement and demolition of the entire existing Peterson Hall #3 Building and the construction of a new replacement facility of approximately 96,000 ASF (Assignable Square Feet) and 160,000 GSF (Gross Square Feet). The new building will include laboratories, lecture rooms and faculty offices.
The project started in February 2008 and has an expected completion date of Spring 2011. The construction site is extremely limited in size due to restrictions from adjacent buildings and roads. The main access to the project site for the Contractor will be from East Campus Drive between Molecular & Life Sciences Center (MLSC) and the Microbiology Building (MIC). Please expect delays on East Campus Drive throughout the duration of the project. The Contractor’s normal work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM.
