Welcome

Part the leaves.

Welcome to our reference project wherein we attempt to track the emerging field of environmental history in a way that weaves meaninghful connections across disciplines.  We not only offer our searchable online bibliography Refworks, but link to newsletters, conferences, and current field research.  In this sense, the project has a life of its own; your suggestions keep the boundaries fluid and responsive to newest scholarship.

We thank you for visiting!

NEW! See the website for the 2008 SOLCHA MEETING IN Belo Horizonte, Brazil. (In Portuguese, English and Spanish).

New updated edition

The editors would like to thank SCAC-Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee and California State University at Long Beach for their generous support of this long-term research project.  And a shout-out to the many colleagues whose thoughtful input represents their dedication to an earth-context for our local stories.

This webpage began as a summer project at Stanford University in 1999, under the guidance of late Prof. John Wirth and Prof. José Augusto Drummond. Although that original version is still online, the field has outgrown the usefulness of that format. New articles, new books, new movies have enriched the discipline, requiring a more user-friendly interface. We hope the new format helps you to build your syllabi, write your research project and advise your students.

We also hope that the new sections (newsletter and work in progress) will encourage you to share your research agenda and make this website a virtual meeting point for anyone interested in Environmental History of Latin America. Send us an email and we will be glad to add your suggestions, comments and proposals to the website.

Refworks - new software The big novelty in this edition is the use of Refworks, a web-base searchable database. Check also our acronyms and other important notes how to use this Bibliography.

EditorsMeet our team. We have had many collaborators since the site was created in 1999. Our current team has scholars from Brazil, Mexico and the United States, and has been collecting references in three languages.

SOLCHA SOLCHA is the newly funded Sociedad Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Historia Ambiental. Here you can find links to previous meetings and to new prospects.

NewsletterCall for papers, news on conferences, new books and fresh ideas on the field. Suggestions are welcome.

Work in Progress There is still much to do in Environmental HIstory of Latin America. New research agendas and new ways to incorporate environmental history in more traditional (or very cutting-edge) narratives of Latin American history.

Relevant Syllabi Teaching environmental history in Latin America is a challenge and rewarding experience. Send us your syllabus and see what your colleagues have been doing in their classes.
