PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROGRAMS
FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

PROGRAMS)
The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) offers a variety of physical activity programs for children with disabilities and special needs. After school clinics and summer programs to meet the unique movement needs of all children are offered and include; The Preschool Motor Development Center, The Perceptual Motor Development Clinic, and Camp Nugget. The Preschool Motor Development Center directed by Jan Fisher provides evaluation and individualized enrichment sessions of gross and fine motor skills, visual perception, body awareness, and associated abilities for children 3 to 5 years of age. The Perceptual Motor Development Clinic and Camp Nugget, directed by Barry Lavay offers children 5 through 12 years of age individualized and group instruction in gross motor fundamental skills, health-related fitness, lead-up games/sport, aquatics and relaxation techniques. These programs are located in Room 60 of the Physical Education Building in the KPE Department.
The programs are built upon a strong conviction that movement is important and beneficial to everyone throughout the lifespan and designed to provide positive movement opportunities and experiences. All children need to be afforded opportunities to enjoy and successfully participate in physical activity. More importantly, movement experiences can make important contributions toward each child's development in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional areas of learning. Finally, these programs serve as a valuable training site for CSULB students preparing for careers in adapted physical education.
