·        Understand your Option and its prerequisites

·        Plan and predict your class schedule several semesters in advance (fill out an academic overview program sheet ).

·        Summer Session course offering are available at individual instructor’s discretion

Department Requirements:

Valid CPR and First Aid cards (minimum level is Community) is required at graduation

·                    Earn a minimum grade of “C” in each KPE major and prerequisite course required for graduation - A course in which a grade lower than a “C” is received must be retaken and successfully completed.  The Repeat/Delete option is only available one time for each course.

·                    Meet Physical Skill Proficiencies which is a 3.5 overall rating

Graduation

·                    Meet all deadlines - Apply approximately one year in advance

·                    Final Degree processing and clearance takes two - three months after the term ends

6.  Be cleared (for all lower division requirements) by your Department Advisor during the semester you are graduating

7.  Pass the Writing Proficiency Examination

GENERAL ADVISING SUGGESTIONS:

·                    Your advisor will advise you, but ultimately you are responsible for your program

·                    Records and copies of all advising materials are kept in a folder in the KPE Department Office. (keep a back up personal copy of all your records)

·                    Declare yourself a KPE major with an option in Adapted Physical Education (code 2-1242) by filling out the necessary forms and signatures in the department office

·                    Fill out and revise an Academic Overview sheet with each semester planned well in advance based upon times and classes offered in previous semesters.  For example, to plan one’s schedule for the Spring semester, the spring schedule of classes from the previous year can be utilized. Be advised that some class times could change so check with your advisor and the undergraduate advising coordinator.

·                    Transfer Student: have a summary transfer of credit form (issued by the Records Office) which tells you which courses have and have not been accepted by the University

·                    Have official transcripts of all completed coursework from other colleges your KPE file Advising File.  Always keep copies of all transcripts for your personal records.

·                    Any transfer student who has not had Human Anatomy (BIOL 208) or Human Physiology (BIOL 207), should take these courses as soon as possible.  Anatomy does not satisfy a GE requirement.  The department requirement is 4 units of human anatomy and 4 units of human physiology.  Comparable courses of equal or greater unit value from community colleges may be accepted.  However, courses of lesser unit values do not meet the requirements and are not acceptable.

·                    See the Single Subject Credential Advisor, Dr. Karen Hakim-Butt (54088), if you have completed a BA degree elsewhere.

·                    General Education (GE): Students should see the Academic Advising Office (54837) in the East Wing of the Library to determine the pattern (catalog) you are on.  Once the pattern is determined, class schedules can be planned. General Education requirements should be completed 1-2 semesters prior to graduation. Transfer students need to check to determine if they are GE certified.

·                    Lower Division Activity/Proficiency requirements should be completed 1-2 semesters prior to graduation. Work toward lower division skill class requirements and proficiencies early.

UPPER DIVISION ADVISING SUGGESTIONS

·                    Pass the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) during the first semester of your junior year

·                    Pass the CBEST one year prior to Student Teaching

·        Apply for a Graduation Check at windows 1-4 Office of Admissions and Records one year prior to graduation  (Fees are paid at the business office). Program Planners need to be completed by your advisor prior to application for a grad check and need to be turned into the grad check office with advisor‘s signature and in a sealed envelope.

·        During the final semester: see the Advising Coordinator (Keith Freesemann 54669) to be cleared in skill proficiencies (average proficiency of 3.5 required) CPR, First Aid.

·        124 units (minimum) required for graduation. Forty units must be earned at the 300-499 level.  They may be GE, major, minor, or elective units. 51 Units must be in general education.
