PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education at CSU, Long Beach offers students a diversified and comprehensive academic course of study and field experiences in the administration and implementation of physical activity programming for individuals with disabilities.

California Adapted Physical Education Specialist Teaching Credential

The following coursework; KPE 320 through 388 are each 3 units and to be taken in sequence with each a prerequisite to the next course:

KPE 320                     Adapted Physical Education (each semester)

KPE 427/527              Physical and Motor Assessment (Fall) can be taken same semester as KPE 387

KPE 387*                   Physical Activity for the Disabled (Fall)

KPE 388*                   Program Planning and Instruction in APE (Spring)

KPE 489                     Field Work in APE (Each semester, 3 units of KPE 489) Field Work in APE

is taken in conjunction with the courses KPE 387 and KPE 388

EDP 350                     Education of Exceptional Individuals (3 units)

Select two courses from the following (each are 3 units):

CD   280                     Sign Language

EDP 405                     Positive Strategies for Classroom Management

EDP 563                     Advanced Methods of Teaching Inds with Significant Disabilities

KPE 526                     Applied Behavior Analysis in PE (every 3rd semester)

KPE 538                     Motor Dysfunction and the Exceptional Person (Spring)

KPE 546                     Developmental Aspects of Motor Behavior  (every 3rd semester)

Graduate Students and Teachers working on APE Specialist Certification

*For graduate students and teachers KPE 537, 538, 638 may be substituted with professor permission for KPE 387 and 388. Each course is offered every third semester on a rotational basis.

Additional Program Requirements:

·        Hold one of the following teaching credentials: Single Subject in Physical Education, Multiple Subject, Standard Secondary with a major or minor in Physical Education, Standard Elementary with an academic major or minor in Physical Education, Standard Early Childhood, Special Secondary in Physical Education, General Secondary, General Junior High School, General Elementary, General Kindergarten Primary. Candidates with a teaching credential other than a Single Subject in Physical Education must take a series of prerequisite physical education core courses as determined by the APE Coordinator.

·        Successful completion of the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST).

 ·      An overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.0 in courses in the APE Program.

PRACTICUM LEARNING EXPERIENCES ADAPTED PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM OF STUDY

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH DEPARTMENT OF KINESIOLOGY & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students studying Adapted Physical Education in the Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education at CSU, Long Beach are provided a variety of supervised practicum learning experiences in a variety of settings that include various disabilities and special needs that range in age from preschool to adult populations:

Public Schools: A variety of adapted physical education experiences are offered under

the supervision of APE Credential Specialist Teachers in various LA to Orange County locations. Experiences are offered across various settings ranging from special day schools to itinerant delivery service models and ages from preschool to secondary.

Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center: A variety of physical activity and sports programs (i. e., wheelchair basketball, floor hockey) offered in a medical and community based setting.

Preschool Motor Development Center: On campus physical activity program for children 3 to 6 years of age.

Perceptual Motor Development Clinic: On campus after school physical activity program for young children 6 to 12 years of age.

Camp Nugget: On campus summer fitness, skill, & sport program for young children 5 to 12 years of age with special needs.

Adapted Wellness Program: On campus individualized exercise program for university students and adults with disabilities.

Southern California State Special Olympics: The Southern California State Special Olympics games are held each summer on campus and include; track and field, gymnastics, aquatics, basketball, tennis and bocci.

Breath Games: On campus track and games meet for children with asthma.
