Tom Wesselmann: The Intimate Images
August 26 - October 12, 2003

Tom Wesselmann: The Intimate Images illuminates the chronological evolution of the renowned artist’s career by examining 47 diminutive, intimate, and most revealing works created from 1961 to 2003. Endearingly termed the “little ones” by the artist, the works were created as preliminary studies for larger scale works such as the Great American Nudes. These studies, sometimes worked over 20 to 30 times until everything was just right, mark an important progression in Wesselmann’s oeuvre from the traditional subjects of art—portraiture, landscape, nudes, and interiors—to abstraction. The “abstracts” reveal an “accidental, internal evolution” discovered in the process of making his large-scale, representational works. This significant selection of small works provides the rare opportunity to follow the artist’s journey of exploration of making. While he developed his work into the large-scale compositions that brought him fame and notoriety as a founder of American Pop Art—a label Wesselmann does not encourage, but accepts—his small-scale work nevertheless retains its importance as a significant part of his working progress.
