Remodeling: New Ideas on the Form and Function of Architectural Models
January 27 - April 18, 2004

ReModeling: New Ideas on the Form and Function of Architectural Models plays with our perception of space. Since the Minimalist movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, artists have attempted to break the barrier between architectural space and the ways in which three-dimensional art objects can shape the area around them. ReModeling expands on this tradition by investigating the architectural model as a form of represented versus actual space. Collectively, the works in ReModeling grapple with the bodily experience of space and how it differs from perceiving two-dimensional representations of space. Acting as a stand-in for other objects, architectural models communicate abstract ideas and reveal how our sensory perception is always shifting and testing our suspension of disbelief. This exhibition presents works by four individuals from diverse disciplines and a variety of media that engage viewers through surprising scale shifts and unexpected materials. The works provoke us to pose such questions as: “How do we perceive the world around us?” and “How do models contribute to the innate process of perception that is part of everyday life?” Perspective, cognition, and three-dimensional and sensory perception are some of the themes presented.

Artists in the exhibition included Leo Saul Berk, Barbara Bestor, Taft Green, and David Schafer.
