Under Construction: The Architecture of Marmol Radziner + Associates
January 28 - April 20, 2003Under Construction: The Architecture of Marmol Radziner + Associates is the first museum exhibition devoted exclusively to the creative output of the architectural firm Marmol Radziner + Associates, named “the hottest young architects in Los Angeles” by The New York Times Magazine. The exhibition provides a snapshot of work dating from 1998 to 2003 and illustrates their design philosophy and process. In their architectural practice, Marmol Radziner + Associates create finely detailed buildings whose beauty lies in the expression of the materials and construction methods. The partners, who met as architecture students at California State University, San Luis Obispo, said, “We love the creative exuberance that comes from putting physical materials together in the real world…. Our aesthetic philosophy is not rooted in style, but in proportion, materiality, and quality of light.” In the Museum’s galleries, this philosophy was expressed through architectural models, computer renderings, drawings, and photographs that highlight a variety of commercial, community, and residential projects, including restorations of homes by Richard Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, which includes an interview with former UAM Curator of Exhibitions Mary-Kay Lombino and a critical essay by Frances Anderton, host of the radio program DnA on KCRW.
