Tina Barney (American, b. 1945)
Born into a wealthy New England family, photographer Tina Barney has made her family the subject of her artistic vision. Photographing the daily lives and social rituals of her family including weddings, cocktail parties, and Christmas dinners, Barney documents the complex relationships played out between family members. In the past several years she has begun to include her self within the photographs, asking why the photographer should remain on the outside of the picture. Rather than criticizing her surroundings as many contemporary artists do, Barney's photographs - which for all their technical sophistication have a snapshot-like quality to them suggesting a familial spontaneity - are empathetic portraits of personal relationships.
