January 27 – April 15, 2012
The exhibition Split Moment addresses movement, performance and its documentation, engaging in expanded definitions of dance, art and performance. Participating artists Josh Azzarella, Trisha Brown, Jocelyn Foye, Babette Mangolte, Kelly Nipper, Yvonne Rainer, and Flora Wiegmann create artworks that rely on documentation to present the live event. The artists work in range of media including drawing, film, sculpture and photography. Through documentation the artists engage the viewers with the performance outside of the limitations of space and time.
These ideas were born out of the seminal postmodern collective the Judson Dance Theatre. Experimenting with the definitions of art and dance, the Judson dancers established groundbreaking aesthetics and art practices that utilized new technologies shared by popular culture. The artists of Split Moment bring a new perspective on movement and performance, conceived as a series of split moments–a play between movements and the transitional space between them.
