Staff Council Meeting Minutes
Friday, November 14, 2008

  1. Call to order 8:31am - No quorum
  2. No Approval of Staff Council Minutes from 10-10-08
  3. No Approval of Staff Council Agenda for 11-14-08

Announcements

  1. Fred Neely--Saturday, December 6, Christmas Parade at Belmont Shore. Come to the parade the store will have cookies, punch, etc.
  2. All staff can get a 50 percent discount from Conroy's Flowers. Give out coupons to all staff.
  3. Sharon Olson--International Education Week is November 17-21. There will be several events.
  4. Barbara Sinclair--President's Commission on the Status of Women invites everyone to the Women's Research Colloquium on Wednesday, November 19, from 5-7:30 p.m. at The Pointe.
  5. Academic Retreat went well. Staff Council Poster. We can buy another poster after we look over it for any mistakes.
  6. Bookstore announcement- Friday, November 21, they will hold a sale for alumni from 4-7:30 p.m. 15-25 percent discount. First 200 get a free ornament. Door prizes, children's area etc.
  7. Apple came out with a new IPod. Having an IPod sale at the book store.
  8. Today, Friday, November 14, is last day of box sale at the bookstore.
  9. Aaron – ASI – announced an awareness event 10/15/08 that presidential debate. UPass – staff and students ride Long Beach Transit free.
  10. Cherishing the Children Christmas party is December 10, at The Pointe for Homeless Children. Emeritus staff can have a table.
  11. $1000 Scholarship from Schools First Credit Union
  12. Gay Arakawa--Alumni Association is offering grants. Encourage to come to Homecoming. There will be campus tours, raffles, games, and many activities.
  13. Holiday Cart Parade. Friday, December 12.
  14. December Staff Council Meeting changed to Thursday, December 11, same time and place.
  15. Raffle tickets for Holiday raffle from Charles Greenwood. Bookstore donated a snowman. Other prizes include gift certificates.

Committee Reports

  1. Membership - There was a meeting with ASMs from all the colleges and there should be new members. The College of Liberal Arts has a new member to Staff Council.
  2. Special Events - Boxes to collect toys for "Cherishing Children" have been distributed throughout campus. Toys are for children aged newborn-17 years. December 4 & 9, from 12-1 p.m, there will be a wrapping party. Location will be Forty-Niner Shops Conference room. One hundred dollars is needed for film to take Polaroid pictures of the children with Santa.
  3. Staff Development - Lunch and Learn Rideshare Options will be held on Thursday, November 20th.
  4. Holiday Raffle.

Special Orders

  1. Time Certain: Nikco Moore-Benefits

    Tax Shelter Annuities. Open Enrollment for TSAs this month. Workshop November 19, from 2-4 p.m. at the Parking Annex Center (next to pyramid) All five Fund Sponsors (AIG, ING, Fidelity, MetLife, and TIAA CREF) will be there to talk to people. All employees can contribute to a TSA. If you don’t sign up again November 30, 2008 will be the last deduction. There will be a freeze in December. You can’t start until January and the money won’t be deducted until March. If you have questions you can call CSU Benefits at 800-975-7978 this number is only active during open enrollment. If you receive unsolicited emails regarding any of this it should go to benefits.

  2. Time Certain: Bethany Price-Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

    CotA has about 500 exhibits and events each year. Carpenter Center does outside shows. University Art Museum had the Warhol exhibit. Recently students have received several high awards. Ford dealer put together a commercial competition and gave the Ford Focus as prizes. The competition was to come up with a 30 second commercial to sell the Focus. Four commercials were selected and CSULB students won three of the four. To see the commercials go on You Tube search Ford Focus commercial challenge. Two design students won Prestige’s Awards. Microsoft next generation of computers. CSULB student won a $20,000 check from Bill Gates.

    CotA has a newsletter with a complete calendar of events. The Dance Department has an intensive audition process for dance students. The musical Hair was put on by CotA. Not enough opportunities for staff so CotA will do $5 tickets for staff or buy one get one free. They will find an event to get staff together. Come support CotA events. Five new student exhibits every year. The exhibits have jewelry ceramics etc. Art Exhibits Sundays 5-7 Holiday Art Sale for students to raise money is on Sunday December 7, 2008. Winter Festival contest DVDs for sale $5 for music.
