Staff Council Meeting Minutes
Friday, June 13, 2008
- Call to order 8:42 am; no quorum.

Announcements
- Bob Rodgers - Opening ceremony for Special Olympics games Saturday, June 14th & Sunday, June 15th in the Pyramid.
- Fred Neely - Bookstore will be upgrading the computer system and should be live by June 30th. Discounts should be automatic when you swipe your ID card.
- Beth Anderson, Housing and Relocation Specialist, can assist in finding homes for CSULB employees. You can view updated housing information in Brotman Hall room 358.
- Fred Neely - The Outpost is scheduled to open in late October or early November. The Starbucks in the dining plaza will open the start of the fall 08 semester.
- Mike Sternfeld, University Print Shop - The Print Shop is getting new equipment. They will be using metal plates and no more film. The Print Shop will also acquire a new production color copier and be able to keep jobs in-house. They should be ready by October or November which should reduce color copy prices. They are going green - recycling more paper and using soy based inks.
Committee Reports
- Treasurer (Charleen) Balance is $4,783.36. Seventy-seven dollars came from the staff day lunch in May.
- Membership (Berta) - Many Staff Council members terms are expiring. She will be sending emails to department ASM for elections of new members.
- Special Events - Presidents summer picnic will be Wednesday, July 16th. Tickets will be $2 and the money comes back to staff council.
- Staff Development (Nancy Green)
- The VA garden tour went well. There was an old jail for sailors there. They sell plants for .50 - $5.00. They have fruit trees which were donated. Mostly volunteer workers at the garden. They are only there in the morning.
- Nancy is planning this summer's fall staff development. If you have any ideas please contact Nancy.
- There is one more shop to see in July which is the Recycling Plant. Please check the staff council webpage for updates.
- Ways and Means - no report.
- Nominating Committee - Zeke Bonilla.
- Chair of Staff Council - Barbara Sinclair nominated and accepted. Unanimous ballot approved.
- Member-at-Large - Zeke Bonilla nominated and accepted. Unanimous ballot approved.
- Chair of Nominating Committee - Kathy Allen nominated and accepted. Unanimous ballot approved.
- Academic Senate. International Education Committee - Sharon Olson nominated and accepted. Unanimous ballot approved.
- University Resource Council - Charleen Rice nominated. Unanimous ballot approved.
- Faculty Advisory Committee on Technology. Andrea Martin nominated. Unanimous ballot approved.
- Campus Climate Committee - Kathy Engberg nominated. Unanimous ballot approved.
Announcement
- Mike Cap De Ville from AV Services is retiring this year. He produced many of the staff T-shirts. Presentation of a gift, Dirtbags hat and jersey, was presented by Charleen Rice.
Special Orders
- Time Certain: President Alexander - 9:00am
- Campus construction - The Peterson 3 building will be coming down starting today. By the end of summer or September we hope it will be gone.
- Colleen's daughter graduated as valedictorian from Wilson High School.
- Projects on campus. Tennis courts – The tennis complex will be constructed by the engineering building. The new Recreation Center will be coming up by the parking lot. There are 3,500 people anticipated to visit the recreation center daily. New lights will be tested on Bellflower and Palo Verde and scheduled to be up by Fall.
- There should be a new roof on the library by the end of fall.
- TThe Blues Festival will be moving to the Rainbow Lagoon. We are expecting about 10,000 visitors on that day.
- University by the Sea will be October 5th.
- Homecoming is scheduled for November 22nd instead of February.
- Thank you for graduation. It was three days of excitement. This was the largest graduating class in the history of CSULB.
- Special Olympics - Expecting 15,000 - 20,000 people over the weekend.
- Brooks college occupants will be leaving in December.

- Student recreation & wellness center.
University Student Union Board of Trustees are having the bowling alley renovated to include Cosmic Bowling and electronic scoring.
- In the fall - there will be a full service Wells Fargo, Sparrows Pizza, and a yogurt shop.
- Student recreation and wellness center expected to open in 2010.
Slogan: Ready. Set. Rec! Students will pay a mandatory fee of $110 per semester. Staff & faculty - monthly fee. Community membership - not available. The student population is too large. This will be a controlled facility with one entrance and one exit.
