  8. Special Orders
    • Time Certain 9:00 a.m.— Tim Ball, Associate Director, Facilities Management— Engineering/Electrical Services & Utilities;
      He discussed CSULB’s renewable resources and energy conservation goals. There are many challenges in reducing energy usage on such a large and growing campus. His office can make presentations to interested campus departments on efficient energy usage. Keeping buildings at comfortable temperatures is a challenge. A Chancellor’s Office executive order calls for a 15 percent reduction in BTU usage over five years. Ball urged to keep doors and windows closed and eliminate personal appliances such as coffee makers and refrigerators—use shared for the office. University policy prohibits personal space heaters and fans except for individuals with medical needs. CSULB is installing solar panels on several Maintenance Yard buildings and on Brotman Hall. CSULB’s energy bill is currently approximately $10.2 million per year. The campus continues to become more energy self-sufficient to meet Chancellor’s Office requirements. It is every employee’s responsibility to be energy efficient.
    • Jon Root, Manager, Integrated Waste Management & Moving Services — Campus renewable resources: Energy management and recyclables.
      All state agencies were required to reduce trash by 50 percent by 2004 and CSULB is doing well in this area. Plant waste is ground up for mulch. Cardboard and paper are picked up and recycled; much of it goes abroad. Approximately 85 tons of paper per year are recycled. Associated Students Inc. handles most can and bottle recycling. His area also is responsible for surplus property. Much of it is auctioned or donated to other non-profit organizations. Computers and electronics, including batteries, can no longer be thrown away. Contact the Safety & Risk Management Office to recycle batteries. The Bookstore can use plastic packing peanuts. An estimated 77 percent of all CSULB discarded materials are recycled. Trash goes to an incinerator in Long Beach. The cost for trash removal has been reduced nearly in half. For information, see http://daf.csulb.edu/offices/ppfm/facilitiesmanagement/recycling/index.html.
