Welcome!

CSULB Shotokan Karate Club is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a nonprofit organization that has been teaching traditional karate-do in the United States since 1955. SKA was founded by Tsutomu Ohshima, a direct pupil of Gichin Funakoshi (the founder of modern-day karate-do).

Mr. Ohshima is the chief instructor of CSULB Shotokan Karate Club and many other SKA-affiliated dojos and university clubs worldwide. Under the direction of Mr. Ohshima, SKA has grown to one of the world's largest and most respected martial arts organization with over 100 dojos in the United States, and affiliate organizations and international dojos in 17 countries.

For over forty years, CSULB Shotokan Karate Club is the oldest martial art club on campus since its establishment in 1968, and is considered to the second oldest karate club to be found in the United States. To this day, CSULB Shotokan Karate Club continues to teach traditional karate to many students and is devoted in passing down the teachings of Mr. Ohshima and Master Funakoshi.

We welcome Everyone: students and alumni, young and old, male and female, with or without martial arts experience, to join our Club and study karate with us.
