Shields racing at the Sunkist series

Club Racing

Although the purpose of the CSULBSA is largely instructional and recreational, there are also many opportunities to race the club's boats. While the club doesn't participate on the collegiate race circuit (yet), our boats are regular and successful participants in a number of local Yacht Club regattas and race series. Interest in sailboat racing is growing and is highly encouraged. There are few quicker ways to improve one's sailing skills than in competition.

There is a place on our boats for all skill levels. Here are some guidelines:

  • Capri/Laser racing skippers should have some basic knowledge of the racing rules. The dinghy racers at SBYC tend to be an easy-going group, so this is a good place to acquire a better understanding of the rules and gain confidence at the tiller.
  • Capri crew can be quite novices and don't even have to have finished their beginning sailing lessons.
  • Shields racing skippers need to have their rules down fairly well and be confident at the helm. Alternately, the helmsman can be less experienced with a skilled tactician aboard.
  • Shields crew experience depends on position, but most require just basic sailing knowledge and a bit of training as you go. The goal this summer is to train anyone who wishes to be a part of a Shields crew.
