Capri sailboats on the dock

Instruction

One of the primary functions of the CSULB Sailing Association is instruction. Lessons are available for those at many skill levels, including those who know nothing about sailing at all. Classes are taught by US Sailing certified instructors and those completing the Beginning Sailing course may earn the appropriate US Sailing card, as well as their club skipper rating.

Enrollment

The club's classes are taught through the Sports and Recreation Department and there is usually no course credit, so it is not necessary to register through the University VRR. Sign-ups for sailing classes usually occur at the club's New Members BBQ at the start of every semester. Alternately, one may just show up the first scheduled day of class or email the instructor directly. Check the club calendar for when classes and seminars are offered.

It is possible, but not necessary, for students to get one unit credit/no credit for the club's Beginning Sailing class, listed in the University course catalog as SAR 210G. Be sure to notify your sailing instructor if you are taking the class for credit.

Note: Sailing is also offered as KPE 121A. This course is not affiliated with the CSULB Sailing Association, though it is taught on our boats. Students may take KPE 121A for a letter grade, but cannot earn their club skipper rating this way.

CSULBSA Sailing Classes

Beginning Sailing

This eight week series of lessons is for people with little or no prior sailing experience. It is a comprehensive basic course, including both US Sailing's beginning and intermediate sailing skills and covers everything required to obtain a club dinghy skipper rating. These lessons are offered at the beginning of every semester, including summer.

Shields Practice Sessions

Weekly sessions on the Shields. They are open to all members who are already confident skippers on the club's dinghies.

Spinnaker Seminars

Instruction on the use of spinnakers on our Shields. Learn nomenclature, required hardware, trim theory, and setup. Practice rigging for the spinnaker, trimming, jibing, and take down initially done safely at dockside and then while under sail. Open to all club members, not just skippers. These seminars are essential for those wishing to become part of a Shields racing crew.

Catamaran Seminars

On any Beach Catamaran Sail day club dinghy and keelboat skippers may receive instruction on the club's Hobie 18s. Learn just how different these multihulls behave compared with a monohull. Instruction will include rigging, the various ways to get the boat to tack, capsize recovery, use of the trapeze, and more. Beach Catamaran days are only scheduled during the summer and early fall.
