About the CSULB Sailing Association
The CSULB Sailing Association is one of the oldest continuing recreational clubs on campus. The club maintains its own fleet of varying craft in order to make sailing accessible and affordable for the CSULB community and to promote sailing as a life long sport.
We sponsor many types of sailing-related events through our association. We enjoy field-trips to racing events and recreational locations. Our efforts are to improve the overall skills and education in everything marine for our participants.
Club Activities
Day-sailing
Qualified club skippers are allowed to sail any time they wish except when the boats are being used for scheduled club events and lessons. Dinghy-class sailboats are limited to Alamitos Bay unless accompanied by a club safety boat. Overnight use of the club's boats is allowed only for official club events.
Instruction
In addition to recreational day-sailing by individual club skippers, the club's primary activity is instruction. Lessons, seminars, and practice sessions are available for those at many skill levels, including those who know nothing about sailing at all.
Group Sailing
There are many scheduled events where the club day-sails as a group. Existing skippers check out the boats. Non-skippers may sail under the supervision of any skipper. These events are diverse, from beach catamaran sailing to moonlight harbor cruises to sailing amongst the Tall Ships. Club boats also turn out for local events such as the Alamitos Bay Christmas Boat Parade and the Fourth of July Fireworks at the Queen Mary.
Field Trips
A number of boating field trips highlight the club's calendar each year including weekends at Catalina Island, Mission Bay weekends in San Diego, and the occasional Land Sailing weekend at El Mirage Dry Lake.
Racing
Although the purpose of the club is largely instructional and recreational, there are also many opportunities to race the club's boats. Club skippers are increasingly making their presence known in local yacht club regattas and have proven themselves serious contenders. Interest in sailboat racing is growing and is highly encouraged.
