In addition to the many awards garnered by our team from the 2009 West Regional Championships, our head coach, Mike Burnham, finally received the recognition he deserves - West Region Coach of the Year! Receiving this distinction wasn't a surprise to us but why he hadn't received it sooner stumped us for quite some time. Coach Mike's shooting technique, teaching style, and rapport with those around him are without equal, in our humble opinion. These qualities are evident upon first meeting him, but he has an additional quality that makes him more compelling as our friend and coach. The Long Beach Archery Team once again proved to be a forced to be reckoned with, claiming numerous distinctions at the 2009 West Regional Championships. The 2009 West Regional Championships were held at Stanford University on April 18th and 19th. Chris Krause took All-West in the male compound division and was undoubtedly a major contributor towards Long Beach's male compound team taking first place. Our female and mixed compound teams also took first, beating out several capable collegiate archery teams.
We are also very pleased to announce that Vickie Phan and Roberto Ghizzi won Rookie of the Year in their respective divisions. Vickie shoots a compound bow, which she learned just last semester, and Roberto shoots a recurve bow, which he picked up less than a year ago.
And these are just a few of Long Beach's accomplishments at West Regionals! For a more detailed look at the results of this competition, visit our Results page.
Officer Elections will be taking place this Friday, May 1st at 4pm (during our regular practice time). Ballots will be passed out at that time and tallied, however, results will not be announced until the end of the semester. If you are a Club member, make your voice heard and vote for the Club member who you feel best represents us. Let's keep our momentum going and build upon our accomplishments this year!
The Long Beach Archery Team returned to Tulare, California and left stronger and more confident than ever. Many of the Long Beach Team members achieved personal best scores - some improving by nearly 200 points - at the 2009 US Indoor National Championships. National Indoor was held on February 28th and May 1st. This is a testament to what outstanding coaching, dedication, and talent can accomplish in a few short weeks. The 2009 California Collegiate Championship (C3) was a wonderful start to the outdoor season for our team. Although everyone had a lot of fun meeting other collegiate-level archers, Long Beach State was all business on the shooting line and came home with more than a handful of medals. For a more detailed look at the results of this competition, visit our Results page. C3 was held on March 14 in Van Nuys, California and was co-hosted by University of Southern California Archery Club and Biola University Archery Club.
The 2009 California State Indoor Championships was held on January 10 and 11 in Tulare, California. The two-day shoot marked the first competition for our 2008-2009 Archery Team and, considering it was the first archery competition for many of our members, we were very pleased with the results. Veteran members Chris Krause and Brendan Hurt placed first and third, respectively, in their division, while returning member Hannah Motegi placed third in her division.
